At Floss Family Dental, we’re proud to offer clear aligners as a contemporary and effective alternative to traditional braces. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, but want a more discreet and flexible option, clear aligners may be the perfect choice for you!
Here’s everything you need to know about how they work, their benefits, and what you can expect from our appointments.
How They Work
Clear aligners are custom-made, clear trays that slowly move your teeth into their desired positions. The process begins with a comprehensive digital scan of your teeth, which is then sent to the clear aligner company – we often use SureSmile and Invisalign.
Once the aligners are back from the dental laboratory, you’ll receive a series of aligners, each designed to make incremental adjustments to your teeth. Most people are required to have ‘attachments’ placed on certain teeth, which helps the aligners move your teeth. These are virtually invisible, and we always try to make them the same colour as your natural teeth – don’t worry, they’re removed once your aligner treatment is complete!
You’ll wear each set of aligners for a specific periods (usually 1-2 weeks) before switching to the next set. The aligners are removable, allowing you to take them out for eating, drinking, brushing & flossing.
Benefits of Clear Aligners
Discreet Appearance: clear aligners are nearly invisible, making them a subtle option for those who prefer not to have visible braces.
Comfort: Made from smooth plastic, aligners are comfortable to wear and less likely to irritate your gums and cheeks compared to traditional metal braces.
Convenience: Aligners are removable, so you can eat and drink without restrictions and maintain your usual oral hygiene routine without obstacles.
Fewer Visits: Treatment typically requires fewer visits to the dentist for adjustments compared to braces, which means less time spent in the dental chair.
Predictable Results: Advanced technology allows us to map out your entire treatment plan, giving you a clear view of your progress and expected results from the start.
Cons of Clear Aligners
Discipline Required: Since aligners are removable, you must be diligent about wearing them as prescribed—usually 20-22 hours per day—to ensure effective results.
Not for Severe Cases: While effective for many orthodontic issues, clear aligners may not be suitable for more complex cases that require significant tooth movement or structural adjustments.
Cost: Depending on your specific treatment plan, clear aligners can be more expensive than traditional braces. However, we offer flexible payment plans with Afterpay, ZipMoney & Humm.
