Regular check-ups and teeth cleaning are a great way to keep your teeth healthy, and your mouth bright and fresh.

However, check-ups at Floss are so much more than just quick checks and teeth cleaning. At Floss Family Dental, during check-ups we provide a full examination of the teeth, gums and other oral tissues. We also provide a professional scale and dental clean to remove plaque and calculus, and a fluoride application to strengthen your teeth and prevent decay.

To maintain optimal oral health, we do encourage our patients to have a regular check-up approximately every 6 months. To learn more about why seeing us every 6 months is essential to good health, click here.

HOW DO DENTAL CLEANING SERVICES WORK?

  • EXAMINATION: When you start your dentist appointment, your oral health therapist or dentist will first perform a physical examination of your mouth. Using a small mirror, they will check all of your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay, gum disease like gingivitis, and other dental health concerns. They will complete a full extra oral and intra oral soft tissue exam to check for things like oral cancer.
  • PLAQUE & TARTAR REMOVAL: The next step of your teeth cleaning is the removal of plaque and tartar from your gum line and in between all of your teeth. To do this, your oral health therapist will use a tool called a scaler and a small mirror. You may hear a scraping sound, but this is completely normal.
  • BRUSHING: After removing the tartar from your mouth, your oral health therapist will start brushing your teeth. Using a special mechanical handpiece with a prophylactic polishing paste, they will expertly scrub your teeth.
  • REMOVE DEBRIS: Once your hygienist finishes brushing your teeth, you will be given a rinse that contains fluoride to swill around your mouth and get rid of any leftover debris.
  • FLUORIDE: The final step of your teeth cleaning is a fluoride application. This treatment helps to strengthen your teeth, prevent decay, and fight against cavities.

WHY IS TEETH CLEANING IMPORTANT?

There is a strong amount of data that supports the importance of teeth cleaning. Brushing your teeth twice a day with good toothpaste and getting regular professional cleans are important for your health and hygiene.

  • Helps control bacteria
  • Prevents gum disease
  • Removes stains to give a brighter smile
  • Resolves bad breath
  • Boosts general health
  • Makes your smile sparkle
  • Removes tartar which harbours bacteria
  • Prevents early tooth loss

  • Saves you money in the long run

IS TEETH CLEANING PAINFUL?

Typically, teeth cleaning is a relatively painless procedure. If you are experiencing any pain during a dental clean, it is a sign that your general oral health upkeep could be improved.

General sensitivity, gum inflammation, tooth decay, and other possible oral diseases caused by things like tatar build-up, or insignificant brushing or flossing, can cause pain during teeth cleaning. If the oral health therapist has to scale and brush more intensely to ensure your teeth and gums are clean, you are more likely to experience discomfort.

If you have any concerns about this process, please speak to your dentist and dental hygienist during your check-up.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TEETH IN BETWEEN CHECK-UPS:

Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly in between professional dentist check-ups and teeth cleaning services is important.

To remove plaque, and prevent tooth decay, gum disease and damage to tooth enamel, apply a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to your toothbrush and brush your teeth, gum line and tongue twice a day. When brushing your teeth, use any fluoride toothpaste recommended by your dentist or their ads. The use of floss is also recommended to keep your teeth and gums in great shape between your dentist visits.
